Chris W. Heichel, MD, FACS serves as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology specializing in cornea, cataract & refractive surgery at the UC San Diego, Shiley Eye Institute. He is recognized by his peers as a skilled surgeon, astute clinician and dedicated educator. Enjoying complex referrals from around the world, Dr. Heichel’s clinical interests focus on advanced keratoplasty techniques, including pediatric, lamellar (DMEK, DSEK, DALK) and laser assisted keratoplasty, stem cell transplantation, keratoprostheses and ocular surface reconstruction, complex cataract cases which include ectopia lentis and dislocated IOLs, iris reconstruction, management of keratoconus utilizing INTACS and crosslinking, as well as advanced techniques in LASIK and phakic ICLs. His current research interests include lens regeneration with stem cells, capsular stability and refractive predictability utilizing capsular tension rings in cataract surgery and the management of ocular surface tumors.
Dr. Heichel is honored to be recognized locally and nationally for his skills and expertise. His awards include US News & World Report’s Top Doctors, San Diego Magazine’s Top Doctors, America’s Top Doctors, Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors and Patient’s Choice Award. Additionally, he has been a recipient of UC San Diego’s Department of Ophthalmology Residency Teacher of the Year Award on numerous occasions. He is a Fellow of the AAO and active member of the ASCRS.
