Tissue Distribution —Corneas, Scleral, and Other Ocular Tissues for Transplant Surgery

At the San Diego Eye Bank®, we have been providing ophthalmologists with high quality transplantable tissues since 1960. Through the gift of eye donation, we are able to provide and distribute corneas, scleral, and other ocular tissues for transplant, education, and research. CustomCut® Technology

As the only eye bank in the world operating its own refractive laser center, the San Diego Eye Bank® utilizes CustomCut® technology to provide anterior, posterior, and intralamellar tissue. With the state-of-the-art technology of the Moria® microkeratome and IntraLase® FS laser, donated corneas can be pre-cut for transplantation.

CustomCut® Tissue Services

The San Diego Eye Bank® provides the following CustomCut® tissue services:

  • Pre-cut corneal tissue with the Moria® microkeratome
  • Pre-cut corneal tissue with the IntraLase® laser
  • Pre-cut corneal tissue for other eye banks and their local physicians

Quality Tissue, Quality Service

CustomCut® tissue from the San Diego Eye Bank® is processed from the highest quality tissue available. All CustomCut® corneas meet stringent standards and criteria set by the San Diego Eye Bank®'s guidelines for pre-cut tissue. Corneal tissue is prepared according to your specifications using the Moria® microkeratome or the IntraLase® FS laser. The trained specialists at the San Diego Eye Bank® are certified in the use of the Moria® microkeratome or the IntraLase® FS laser, as well as other refractive equipment.

Our senior specialists have over 30 years of combined experience in tissue procurement, processing, and refractive surgery utilizing manual and automated microkeratomes and the IntraLase® FS laser. We are also proud to have both am experienced VISX® certified trainer and an experienced IntraLase® certified surgical proctor on staff. 

The corneas we provide meet all U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Eye Bank Association of America, and State of California tissue safety standards. Processed tissue is shipped to your office or clinic using the fastest possible shipping method. We are confident that the quality of both our tissue and the services we provide will meet your highest expectations.

Worldwide Shipping

Our Distribution team packs Ocular Transplant Tissue in a validated Nancool shipping system that is qualified to maintain refrigeration for up to 92 hours and required for transport. Shipping arrangements will be made with any combination of local, national, and international air carriers and courier services to ensure that your request is filled as quickly as possible. You will also be provided with all necessary information regarding flight times and intermediaries in order for you or your staff to receive incoming shipments.

  • Physical examination
  • Medical-social history interview with NOK
  • Tissue evaluation
    • Slit lamp and specular microscopy examination of epithelial, stromal, descemets, and endothelial layers
  • Serologic testing (Additional tests available upon request)

    • HIV NAT
    • Syphilis
    • HTLV- 1&2
    • HCV
    • HCV NAT
    • HBsAg
    • ABO, Rh
